February 8, 9 a.m. - 9p.m. at the New England Historic Genealogical Society, 99 - 101 Newbury Street, Boston

Join us for a free day of research and learn about African American family history. NEHGS Online Genealogist David Allen Lambert will help you learn how to trace African American ancestors, author NEHS President Alex R. Goldfeld will present stories of Boston’s earliest African American community, and former Executive Director of the Springfield Museums and author Joseph Carvalho III will share his revised edition of Black Families in Hampden County, Massachusetts 1650-1865, recently published by NEHGS.

The lecture will be followed by a book signing and reception. All participants will receive free access to the NEHGS research library for the day, with time to research on your own.

Melissa Mannon, M.S., will speak about caring for your family’s valuable informational materials. Mannon will sign copies of her The Unofficial Family Archivist: A Guide to Creating and Maintaining Family Papers, Photographs, and Memorabilia.

She will discuss the basics about avoiding factors that can harm or destroy your materials; the best ways to ensure that your family history is documented and maintained for future generations; options for duplication, digitization and conservation of cherished family items; and considering your family’s role in a wider community history.

Mannon is the proprietor of ArchivesInfo.com and is an archivist and cultural heritage consultant with twenty years of experience.

March 29, 6 p.m., at Sacred Heart Church Hall, 9 Sun Court Street, North End

Lori Rogers-Stokes, Ph.D., a public historian and a member of the Board of Directors of the Arlington Historical Society, will discuss Arlington’s role as a watch post along the spy road from Boston to the Provincial Congress in Concord.  She will also elaborate on the mood of the countryside at the time of the Revolution and the partnership between the town of Boston and neighboring communities.

This event is cosponsored by the Arlington Historical Society, founded 1897.

The mission of the North End Historical Society is to collect and preserve the historical record and material culture of Boston’s North End, to preserve, catalog, and present these resources in service of the wider community through publications, lectures, educational programs, and exhibits. The mission includes ongoing efforts to bring together scholars and individuals knowledgeable and interested in all aspects of the North End’s history.
